HBM720ALU-Z nominated for the Aluminium Innovation Award
Speed, efficiency and sustainability combined and redefined in the HBM720ALU-Z high-performance bandsaw
The aluminium industry faces major challenges: rising energy costs, increasing international competitive pressure and the growing demand for sustainable and cost-effective production processes. Companies must strike a balance between productivity, quality and resource efficiency. This is precisely where the HBM720ALU‑Z comes in. It combines maximum sawing performance with a resource-efficient manufacturing process, thereby enabling cost-effective and sustainable aluminium processing. Thanks to innovative sawing technology and high process flexibility, it sets new standards in the machining of aluminium bolts and non-ferrous metals.
Performance figures that impress!
With this bandsaw, Behringer has closed a technological gap. Through the combination of innovative machine kinematics, highly dynamic motion sequences and a specially designed high-performance saw band, the system achieves a cutting speed of up to 3,000 m/min – a throughput previously typically reserved for circular saws.
At the same time, users benefit from the advantages of band saw technology: a significantly wider range of bolt diameters can be cut without changing tools. This reduces set-up times, increases machine availability and improves flexibility in day-to-day production.
The HBM720ALU‑Z processes aluminium billets with a diameter of up to 700 mm and can cut 300 mm of material in just 10 seconds, thereby achieving productivity levels on a par with modern aluminium circular saws. However, the key added value lies not only in speed, but in the unique combination of productivity and resource efficiency. Whilst conventional circular saws operate with a kerf of 10 mm, the HBM720ALU‑Z requires just 2.1 mm. This corresponds to a 79 per cent reduction in material loss.
What does this mean in practice?
For a reference customer with around 120,000 cuts per year and an average bolt diameter of 300 mm, this results in a calculated material saving of over 180 tonnes of aluminium per year. Due to the low material loss, significantly less swarf is produced. As a result, considerably smaller quantities of aluminium need to be collected, transported and melted down in an energy-intensive process. Based on the emission factor of 0.5 t CO₂e per tonne specified by the International Aluminium Institute for the recycling of new aluminium scrap, this results in a calculated emission avoidance potential of around 90 t CO₂e per year. Annual cutting channel losses are thereby reduced from around 229 tonnes of aluminium with a circular saw to approximately 48 tonnes with the HBM720ALU‑Z.
This higher material yield does not come at the expense of productivity. Quite the contrary: in industrial use, production output has increased from around 3,500 to over 10,000 cuts per month. This corresponds to a performance increase of almost 200 per cent. The HBM720ALU‑Z thus demonstrates that resource efficiency and maximum output do not have to be mutually exclusive.
An innovation for the future
Aluminium is a material with enormous future potential, but its production and processing require the responsible use of resources. With the HBM720ALU‑Z, we have succeeded in no longer viewing productivity and sustainability as conflicting objectives, but in combining both goals within a technology suitable for industrial use.
